Te Reo Marama

Context :
Te Reo Marama is leading an historic moment in public health history in New Zealand. The Maori Affairs Select Committee has called for an official Parliamentary Inquiry into Maori (Indigenous New Zealanders) tobacco use that will also investigate the tobacco industry.

Maori smoking prevalence rates are at 45% compared to the general population rate of 20%. It is crucial that this Inquiry has international support.

This is also the first opportunity to actually question the Industry within this political structure. We need your signature to this petition to support the Inquiry into this major issue for the Maori community and for all New Zealanders.

I call on you to please sign up!

Support for the Maori Affairs Select Committee enquiry on Maori tobacco use and the tobacco industry

Message :
Tena koe-Greetings

Mr Chair, I am supporting this petition to show support for the Committee’s courageous and bold decision to hold an Inquiry on Maori tobacco use.

As the indigenous Maori community is disproportionately affected by tobacco use in New Zealand it is fitting that leadership on this key public health issue is being supported by this Committee.

I would also like to encourage the Inquiry to take the opportunity to question representatives of the tobacco industry and their collective role in maintaining an addictive product that causes substantive illness and premature death within both the indigenous Maori community and New Zealand population. This Inquiry will provide a chance for the Committee to hold the tobacco industry accountable and responsible for the appalling loss of life and illness.

Questioning the relevance and role of tobacco in 21st Century New Zealand reflects both national and global leadership on this major public health issue.

I thank you again for this historical opportunity to place this matter on the agenda for Maori and all New Zealanders.
