Thailand amends 1992 Non-Smokers Health Protection Act

THAILAND STRENGTHENS ITS NON-SMOKER SAFEGUARDS

On Wednesday 4th February 1997 the Thai parliament passed a bill which further strengthened Thailand’s commitment to the provision of smoke-free areas. The amendment pays particular attention to air-conditioned areas.

A complete ban has been put on smoking in air-conditioned mini-marts, hairdressers, beauty salons, pharmacies, sports centres and air, rail and sea terminals. The ban also extends to outpatient clinics, religious buildings and telephone boxes. The most dramatic change includes a partial ban on smoking in all air-conditioned workplaces. The only areas exempt from the ban are private rooms or offices and designated smoking areas.

Train stations and air-conditioned restaurants must be 75% smoke-free, a 25% increase. These changes will help to develop a non-smoking culture in Thailand and protect the health of non-smokers who are too often subject to the ill-effects of other’s smoking.
