I would add to the above that Healthy Buildings International and other industry indoor air consultants have been funded by the tobacco industry's CENTER FOR INDOOR AIR RESEARCH. This organization does for passive smoking what the Council for Tobacco Research did for active smoking. It funds about 85% "legitimate" research on non-ETS subjects through an outside science advisory board which oversees the peer-review process. All its ETS research is funded by contracts which are approved by tobacco executives and industry law firms. Examples of this type include work published by the Oak Ridge Group (Roger Jenkins et al.) in the U.S. and by the Covance/Corning Hazelton Group (Keith Phillips et al.) in the U.K. Two scientist colleagues who wanted to conduct independent ETS research funded by CIAR have told me that it is not possible.
