Research plainly shows that tobacco smoking is the primary factor involved in increasing premature mortality in Poland, especially from cancer.
The purpose of the programme of primary intervention of tobacco-related diseases realised in 1993-1995 in Poland was evaluation of the population's risk of tobacco-related diseases and finding scientific bases for further nation-wide activities in tobacco-related disease prevention.
The main aims of the programme were realised in three parts:
- an analysis of the structure, dynamic, and geography of cigarette consumption and attitudes toward tobacco smoking in Poland;
- monitoring of the concentration of toxic and carcinogenic substances in tobacco products sold on the Polish market;
- analysis and evaluation of the influence of active and passive tobacco smoking on cancer morbidity and mortality in Poland.
The intervention part of the programme included:
- creating a programme aimed at shaping healthy behaviour, health education and promotion regarding tobacco smoking;
- creating a network of anti-nicotine counselling and addiction therapy.
The realisation of the programme created a scientific basis for further interventions in tobacco control in Poland, as well as more thorough scientific analyses aimed at defining the influence of tobacco smoking on morbidity and mortality from tobacco-related diseases in Poland.
