A SMALL CAMPAIGN FOR WORLD NON SMOKING DAY

For World Non Smoking Day 1996, the WHO chose the theme "Sports the arts and tobacco". The Dutch Foundation on Smoking and Health (DFSH), chose the relation between smoking and sports as the central issue for a small campaign.

In the Netherlands a self-regulatory code exists, which forbids the portraying of sports people in tobacco-advertising. So we don't have the problem of sports people promoting tobacco in our country, except motorbike and car racing.

A lot of sports people in Holland are dedicated non-smokers, as everywhere. We asked Ellen van Langen (Gold on the Olympic Games 1992 in Barcelona) to be photographed for an advertisement in our newspapers. That is published during her first appearance in the Olympic Games of Atlanta. A filmed testimonial was made available to the media that used it during World Non Smoking Day on May 31 st.

Estimated is that 60% of the population will have seen the advertising after the campaign. The theme "I don't smoke, I play sports" will be maintained. T-shirts, caps and other materials with the logo will be distributed. In the advertisement the number of a help line is mentioned. The results will be made public during the congress.
