GIVING UP SMOKING GROUP COURSE

Slovenian Heart Foundation organized the first group course on smoking cessation in May and June, 1996. It was called: FRESH BREATH. We have used our experiences in treatment of other addictions(tablets, alcohol, narcotics etc.) We received applications from 29 people, but when they learned that a six-week course will cost them as much as they spend on cigarettes in the same time period, only 13 participants decided to go on. We had 8 two-hour sessions directed by a psychotherapist, a psychiatrist in specialty. Administrative and technical affairs were conducted by a medical technician. Others who cooperated were: a cardiologist, a pulmologist, an endocrinologist, a nutritionist, a pedagogue, an oncologist, a professor of physical education, a general practitioner and a pharmacist. Only 11 participants persisted till the end of the course, 9 of them completely stopped smoking, whereas 2 substantially restrained from smoking with an intent to stop entirely. Abstinentious occurrences were overcome by a chewing gum Nicorette. A club of former smokers was established which will meet once monthly and maintain links with a psychotherapist.
