THE KUNGSBERG PROJECT. EXPERIENCES OF A 3-YEAR INTERVENTION SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAMME

The current project was conducted as a collaborative school-based tobacco prevention programme during 1993-1996 in Linköping, Sweden with the aim to create a model for establishing tobacco free schools.

The project was addressed to teachers, students, parents, non-teaching staff, school nurses and all others who visited the school during normal school hours.

The implementation of a tobacco free school has been done step-wise by the following activities:

The three-year follow-up results of this study revealed that students receiving the programme in the studied school had not changed their tobacco habits very much. In this perspect the project did not reach the initial goals. The results should however be considered in a wider and long term perspective. Among the benefits can be mentioned the development of a new fruitful networks of health promotion workers inside and outside the school willing to share experiences and knowledge with each other and with other schools. As a result many schools in the county have been inspired to initiate and develop their own tobacco preventive programmes.

The lecture will present some of the lessons learned in the implementation of the project.

Kungsberg is a secondary school(550 pupils on roll), situated in an urban area in the south of Sweden with a varied social population mix. It has a large catchment area, taking students from 4 feeder schools.
