SMOKING PREVENTION IN SCHOOLS

Smoking Prevention in the young people has always been seen as a priority by the Veneto Region in Italy. There is a Regional project on tobacco prevention in schools.

Methods and materials: A guide for teachers was published in 1990. After some years of experience the guide has been revised and a new version is now ready. A multimedia tool for students has been constructed to accompany the guide.

The guide is divided in units which deal with the following topics: Adolescence and their behaviour, Opinions on smoking and smoking habits, Why Smoke, Information on consumption and health hazards and Why Not Smoke. Each unit is provided with questionnaires, working modules, examples and information on how to conduct the unit.

The multimedia tool consists in diskettes for computer which contains information and 10 quiz games that children can play with. The scenario of the tool is a smoke free city constituting of a park, hospital, school, bar, sport complex, tobacco shop and a bill board. Each scene contains figures which offer various information on smoking prevalence, health hazards, legislation etc. The quiz contains 100 questions at random, and at the end of each successful game a slogan appears.
