SS 16.00-17.30 Special sessions
Of all youngsters smoking today, 50% will eventually die prematurely, a quarter even in middle age (Doll & Peto).
This gruesome fact implies that in the 2030 or so, tens of thousands of adults will die because of a smoking habit they developed long ago. If we are to prevent this to happen we have to act now!
In our campaign we aim at schools (teachers, management, boards). We try to involve not only the individual teacher but the school as a system. Statistics prove that at 11 or 12 years old, most of the children never smoked at all. It is easier to maintain this healthy behaviour than trying to break the habit at later ages, once children started smoking already.
We ask schools to arrange a non-smoking agreement with all juniors at the age of 12-13 and keep this agreement vivid during the school year, ending up with some kind of reward after one year.
In a pilot in Amsterdam Holland we cooperate with the Local Health Authorities, a number of local schools and with the University of Amsterdam to try out this prevention concept.
