HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES ON MORTALITY BY SOCIAL CLASS AND OCCUPATION

Since the early part of the 19th century the Registrar General of England and Wales has published statistics on occupational mortality which have provided major insights to the changing patterns of health. This paper will describe the historical evolution of these publications, giving the main developments and innovations in analysis and interpretation. It will put these into an international context and will describe the role of these analyses in the context of the Health of the Nation Strategy for England.
