The present report describes the conception and evaluation of an anti-smoking intervention carried out in German schools. The goal of the study was to develop and evaluate a behavioural oriented intervention program to foster the primary and secondary prevention of cigarette smoking in schools. The intervention was carried out at six schools with a total of 1.299 pupils.
Specific treatment conditions were:
- a) a behavioural treatment for teachers and parents who smoked,
- b) a stop and maintenance programme for pupils who smoked,
- c) an assertiveness training programme for children at risk.
The study was evaluated with a waiting-list-control-group-design: The intervention was carried out in four schools and two other schools served as a control group. The comparison of the baseline data with the data directly after the intervention revealed a significantly decreased percentage of pupils who smoked in the experimental group, while the number of pupils who smoked in the control group remained constant. At a seven month follow-up the effect of the intervention remained stable.
