EUROPEAN NETWORK OF HEALTH PROMOTING SCHOOLS: INNOVATION AND CHANGE

A whole school approach to health promotion has a considerable impact upon all aspects of school life. This requires the introduction of structural changes, many new ideas and methodologies at differing levels within schools, and the involvement of the community. Concepts and principles are being developed through a network of project schools situated in each of the 37 European countries which have undertaken to join the European Network of Health Promoting Schools.

For a school to be health promoting, the environment within which the occupants of the school live and work, needs to mirror the other messages that the school gives about health. Schools that are developing health promoting policies and practices need to consider the range of improvements to their environment that will reinforce the health messages and opportunities they want to convey. These might include policies on smoking that provide a healthy environment and also strengthen the message about smoking and health.

Through participatory methods, pupils and teachers become actively involved in the exploration and discovery of values and are encouraged to think critically about their attitudes and beliefs and build upon their own experiences
