THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SMOKING PREVENTION PROGRAMME "BE SMOKEFREE" FROM THEORY TO CONTENT
- AUTHOR: I Holden Bergh
- INSTITUTION: Norwegian Cancer Society, Oslo, Norway
In the fall of 1994 the Norwegian Cancer Society initiated a three-year school-based smoking prevention project, targeted at students age 13 to 15 years old in lower secondary schools (7th to 9th grade). There are three different intervention groups (n=3300) and a control group (n= 1100). The population in each group is random sampled and contryrepresentative.
The objectives of the programme are:
- To keep the students smokefree
- To identify one or several factors that contribute to maintain smokefree students
- To develop measures and methods for smoking prevention which will motivate the whole population of students to stay smokefree
The intervention is mainly based on the social influence model. BE SmokeFREE consists of three elements: a curriculum with lesson plans for each grade level, involvement and social support from parents, and teacher training.
The main emphasis in the curriculum is on:
- being free as the opposite of nicotine dependency
- alternatives to smoking
- development of skills to resist smoking
- knowledge of short and long-term consequences of smoking
- knowledge of tobacco advertising and cultural promoters
Results from the first and second follow-up surveys of the programme on recruitment of smokers will be presented at the Helsinki conference by Norwegian Cancer Society research fellow Ola Joesendal.
