A QUALITATIVE EVALUATION OF AN INTERACTIVE DEVICE FOR THE PREVENTION OF YOUNGSTERS SMOKING

The objective of this study is to evaluate one of the numerous stands of interactive museum of Epidaure (center for cancer prevention) which is a "smoking machine".

Primary schools, secondary schools and sixth form colleges can visit the museum which is 400m2. The pedagogic team role is to communicate on prevention cancer and to practice health education.

The study presented here consist at a qualitative evaluation, made up of questionnaires answered by 67 children(aged 9/11) two weeks after visiting Epidaure with their teacher.

The smoking machine is an apparatus to demonstrate the harmful effect which smoking has on the lungs. It focuses on children themselves experimentating and operating the machine and seeing the results as the cigarette is smoked; a paper filter records the deposits of tar which accumulate in the smoker's lungs. Another paper filter shows what the passive smoker inhales.

The evaluation, that is the analysis of the responses obtained from these 67 children proves that the smoking machine had a profound effect, by allowing direct observation of methods and results. The progressive discovery of the harmfulness of tobacco (smoking) made it very thought provoking.

An interactive museum such as Epidaure must evaluate its stands in order to improve its performs and its efficacity.
