The Hungarian Ministry of Welfare has contracted the Healthy City Foundation of Pecs with international collaborators to conduct an 18 month anti-smoking project at a cost of $1 million. The aim of the project is to develop a comprehensive strategy for combatting smoking in Hungary, begin to implement and evaluate that strategy.
The three main thrusts of the strategy are:
- preventing young people from starting smoking through education and health promotion activities
- persuading adult smokers to stop smoking by health promotion and help for those who want to stop
- protecting non-smokers by reducing their exposure to environmental tobacco smoke
The structural and organisational setup of the project is described as well as the community approach through a number of task force groups. The connected research programmes and the communication strategy make an integral part of the presentation.
