NON-SMOKING COUNTY - A COMMUNITY-BASED INTERVENTION

The aim of the project 'Non-Smoking County' is to minimize smoking and promote the existence of non-smoking cultures within the geographical area of Vejle County, by means of a concentrated programme involving the setting up of as many non-smoking environments as possible.
There is 330.000 habitants in the county, and we focus in particular on the setting up of policies concerning smoking, and of as many nonsmoking environments as possible in:
- hospitals
- public day care institutions
- private houses, where day care is undertaken
- schools
- public sector places of employment
- private sector places of employment.
The idea behind the project is to intensify preventative efforts with regard to smoking, in a manner that is so intensive and on such a wide front that all age groups within the population will be affected and involved.
This current project involves the use of live age groups. These are:
- Unborn children (pregnant women), infants (parents) and preschool children
- School-age children
- Young people
- Adults of an age to be active on the labour market
- Senior citizens
Efforts in relation to each of these groups have two components:
- Efforts aimed at creating non-smoking environments within the sphere of everyday life
- Efforts targeted at the individual.
