WORKING TOWARDS A SMOKEFREE CITY BY THE LOCAL APPLICATION OF A GENERAL TOBACCO CONTROL STRATEGY

Smoking has been identified as the number one priority for improving health of inhabitants of the City of Birmingham and a series of new initiatives are being implemented, complimenting the successful activities of previous years; which closely follow and expand on the national Tobacco Control Alliance Strategy.

Birmingham is recognised as the leading 'Smoke-Free City' in the UK and works closely with other successful alliances regionally, nationally and internationally. Birmingham's way of working is being adopted by other organisations.

The Health Authority, City Council and other organisations work collaboratively on a variety of initiatives which include supporting professionals, providing assistance to people wishing to quit smoking, political lobbying for changes in legislation, extending smoke-free areas in public places and workplaces, restricting availability of cigarettes to the young by enforcement of illegal sales legislation and a continued undermining of tobacco industry activities through counter-advertising and sponsorship. The use of mass media communications is an integral part of the campaign. Monitoring is both quantitative and qualitative.

The city-wide campaign reflects the cultural, religious and racial and socio-economic diversity of the City and is endeavouring to meet ambitious national targets with respect to smoking prevalence and consumption.
