TOBACCO CONTROL AND ACTIVITIES OF SMOKING PREVENTION IN SLOVAKIA

The prevalence of smoking was estimated at 43% of men and 26% in women. The transnational tobacco companies (TTC) aggressively promote the cigarette consumption (especially of women) and try to prevent tobacco control measures (ignored and weakened by lobbying).

In the 1990s the annual cigarette consumption of cigarettes was from 1,582 to 1,627 per capita/year.

In 1995 was prepared the new legislation of tobacco control - a proposal of the Act for the protection of nonsmokers, including standards of maximum tar levels (15 mg/cig. since 1997, 12 mg/cig. since 2001), health warnings, restrictions of smoking in the workplaces banning of advertisement and sanctions.

The latest monitoring of smoking, quit and win campaign, main actual activities of prevention and economical estimation of tobacco-related health hazard in the Slovak Republic are described.
