SMOKING HABITS IN HUNGARY AMONG THE ADULT AND CHILDREN POPULATION

Aims:

In the surveys, the authors have examined smoking habits, attitudes towards smoking, beliefs regarding smoking and its health consequences, and motivating factors in taking up and stopping smoking among the Hungarian adult and child-age population. The survey took place within the project called " Population Based Anti-Smoking Campaign" supported by the World Bank *.

Method:

In November 1995 and January 1996 surveys were conducted on a 2000-person national representative sample among the population of 18 and over, and on a 1.500-person sample of elementary and secondary school children in Hungary on the topics mentioned in Introduction.

Results:

Major findings of the surveys were:

1. The average age for starting smoking in the past 20 years changed to about 3 years earlier.

2. Although rates present in smoking differ between men and women, tendencies indicate equalisation of these differences.

3. Measures aiming to limit smoking would be welcome by the respondents, either smokers or non-smokers.

Conclusions:

Besides learning about the smoking habits among adults, the objective of the investigations was to establish a scientific basis for a national campaign which aims at preventing taking up smoking and providing assistance for stopping the habit. The campaign is continuing at the time of submitting the abstract as well.
