European Heart Network
he European Heart Network (EHN) is a Brussels-based alliance of
heart foundations and other concerned non-governmental organisations
throughout Europe. The commitment is to prevention of Europe's
number one cause of mortality and morbidity, cardiovascular disease.
Aims:
- promoting healthy diet and reducing tobacco consumption in Europe
- pressing an adequate emphasis on cardiovascular health in all
EU policies and programmes, in particular concerned with health
promotion, education and training, research and occupational health
- ensuring that implications of EU legislation and regulations for
cardiovascular health are recognised by Europe's decision makers
Activities:
1996 European heart network established a tobacco expert group.
The European heart network responds to EU proposals, programmes
and reports and also comments on and recommends EU legislation
through meetings with the European Commission officials and Member
of the European Parliament.
The network monitors EU policies and their impact on cardiovascular
disease and cardiovascular risk factors. Monthly newsletters inform
the national members of developments of EU policies.
Annual meeting brings together all members of EHN for three days
of workshop and General Assembly. In 1996 there were 21 full members
and the network«s geographical coverage has also broadened to
encompass countries in Eastern and Central Europe as well as Western
Europe.
