Smoke-free Europe Conference Resolution on the Progress
made in Slovenia
The Conference for a Smoke-free Europe, held in Helsinki from
2-4 October 1996 with more than 500 scientists, administrators,
politicians and public health professionals and activists from
50 countries, and to which Mr. Padraig Flynn, Commissioner of
the European Commission, Ms. Terttu Huttu-Juntunen, Minister of
Social Affairs and Health of Finland, Mr. William B. Schultz,
Deputy Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and
Mr. Prabhat Jha, of the World Bank attended,
- notes with great pleasure the news that the Slovenian Parliament,
on 2 October 1996, passed a comprehensive tobacco control law
that includes, among other things, a complete ban on tobacco advertising,
2% of tobacco tax used to support cultural and sport activities,
health warnings on packages, smoke-free public places and an age
limit for purchasing cigarettes,
- congratulates the Slovenian Parliament for passing such a
law,
- encourages the Slovenian authorities to exchange experiences
with those European countries that have already implemented similar
policies and with those that are planning to do so.
