GLOBALink

Tools for Efficient Tobacco Control

Context

Tobacco control activists (TCAs) are often isolated from each other and lack information related to worldwide tobacco and tobacco control activities. In contrast, the industry uses all means of communication to achieve its commercial objectives.

Objective

In order to create closer links between tobacco control activists, and to provide instant access to relevant information, the UICC in 1993 assumed the management of GLOBALink, the International Tobacco Control Network initiated by the American Cancer Society.

GLOBALink provides real international support for tobacco control activities and has on many occasions helped to influence governments to implement smoking regulation legislation.

GLOBALink provides a unique forum for many types of requests, e.g. leaflets in various languages, or data from multiple sources, saving time and resources.

The Network has been identified by the tobacco industry as the main coordinating agent of the International Tobacco Control Movement (see Tobacco International, cover story, December 1994).
