developing bacterial pneumonia compared with nonsmokers with HIV infection.

In HIV positive patients, progression time to full-blown AIDS is significantly reduced in

smokers (mean 8.2 months) compared to nonsmokers (mean 14.5 months). Smokers

also developed pneumocystis carinii pneumonia more rapidly (9 months) compared

to 16 months for nonsmokers.
