Smoking may impair acclimatization to high altitudes and may cause a decreased

capacity for oxygen delivery to the lungs. In a study of 109 men working on a project in

Peru at an altitude of 10,500 feet, (3200 meters), ten had to return to lower altitude for

nonmedical reason, all of whom were smokers.
