| | In 1761, the British physician John Hill described five cases of nasal cancer that he |
| | attributed to nasal snuff use. He wrote "No man should venture upon snuff who is not |
| | sure that he is not liable to cancer, and no man can be sure of that". |

| | In the 1800's an American national characteristic was a distended cheek, the |
| | identifying mark of the tobacco chewer. In a Lorillard ad, a happy farmer with a swollen |
| | jaw exclaims, "It ain't toothache - its Climax." |

| | Charles Dickens wrote in American Notes (1842): "In the hospitals, the students of |
| | medicine are requested to eject their tobacco-juice into the boxes provided for that |
| | purpose, and not to discolour the stairs." He declared that he could not understand |
| | how Americans had won their reputation as riflemen, judging their poor aim when |
| | spitting tobacco. Another British writer sardonically commented that the national |
| | American symbol should not be the bald eagle, but rather the spittoon. |

| | "At the turn of the century, it was discovered that tuberculosis was transmitted through |
| | expectoration, and the practice of chewing and spitting quickly became socially |
| | unacceptable and illegal in many public places. With the invention of the |
| | cigarette-rolling machine, it was possible to produce a cheap new tobacco product. |
| | By the early 1920's, cigarettes had replaced smokeless tobacco. Per capita |
| | consumption of cigarettes in the United States rose dramatically, from 50 cigarettes |
| | per year in 1900 to 4200 by 1965." |
