US Tobacco and the Smokeless Tobacco Council contributed $975,000 to national

parties between 1988 and 1992, most in soft money to the Republican National

Committee.

In the early 1990's, Louis Bantle was the $2 million a year chairman of US Tobacco

Company of Greenwich Conn., makers of Skoal and Copenhagen smokeless

tobacco. His company contributed $100,000 to the 1992 Bush re-election campaign

and hosted a $350,000 Bush fund-raiser. At the same time, UST got high-level Bush

administration help in battling foreign governments that banned the import and sale of

snuff.

Bantle and UST, ironically, give generously to the national Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Council and are major backers of a drug treatment center in Baltimore. Louis Bantle

cut the ribbon on Bantle Hall in Baltimore at a ceremony with guest speaker Betty

Ford and former president Gerald Ford.

develop oral cancer than abstainers, US Tobacco's president, Joseph Taddeo

testified under oath to Congress: "Oral tobacco has not been established as a cause
