| | In testimony to Congress, Taddeo denied that low-nicotine Skoal Bandits are an |
| | introductory or "starter product" for new users before they move up to higher nicotine |
| | brands such as Copenhagen. ("Sooner or later, it's Copenhagen.") This contradicted |
| | a memo from an executive vice president of US Tobacco that "Skoal Bandits is an |
| | introductory product". Taddeo also revealed under questioning by Rep. Mike Synar |
| | that his total 1993 compensation was $5.5 million in salary, bonuses, and company |
| | stock. |

| | In 1993 and 1994, Senator Bob Dole took 26 flights aboard US Tobacco Company |
| | corporate jets. UST, the nation's biggest producer of smokeless tobacco has |
| | contributed $40,000 to Dole's political committee since 1987, and its senior vice |
| | president is a board member of the Dole Foundation charity. At the same time, Dole |
| | has worked to hold down taxes on smokeless tobacco. A Dole amendment in 1985 |
| | set the tax on smokeless tobacco at less than three cents a can. |

| | A May 3, 1990 Wall Street Journal article "With the Help of Teens, Snuff Sales |
| | Revive" described US Tobacco, which controls 85% of the moist snuff market. "The |
| | company targets mostly white, blue-collar males who work in factories or on farms, or |
| | in such industries as lumber, steel and energy. To reach that audience, UST does little |
| | print advertising. Instead, it and other smokeless tobacco makers have learned to fish |
| | where the fishing is good. They spend millions to sponsor such events as auto racing, |
| | rodeos, monster truck shows and tractor pulls, where their blue-collar customers are |
| | likely to gather." |
