Pipes And Cigars: General

globalink (artefact pour saut de ligne)

Cigar sales in the US dropped from 9 billion in 1964 to 2 billion in 1992. However, the

market for premium cigars costing $1.25 or more has recently increased. 38% of

upscale cigar buyers are also millionaires; 60% wear a $500-plus watch, and 90%

traveled abroad in the last year.

Men who smoke five or more cigars a day have a 220% greater risk of lung cancer

and a 620% greater risk of throat and oral cancers than nonsmokers.

Time, June 21, 1999, p. 83

Relative risk in cigar smokers compared with nonsmokers of heart disease is 1.27%,

for COPD is 1.45, for oropharyngeal cancer 2.02, and for lung cancer 2.14. There was

a synergistic relation between cigar smoking and alcohol consumption as risk factors

for oropharyngeal and esophageal cancer. By comparison, relative risks associated

with current cigarette smoking by men are much higher: 1.5 to 3.0 for coronary heart

disease, 9 to 25 for COPD, 8 to 24 for lung cancer, and 4 to 12 for oropharyngeal

cancer.

In a study from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, current cigar smoking in

men was associated with a five-fold increased risk of lung cancer mortality compared

to never smoking men. The relative risk for cancer of the pharynx and oral cavity in the

group was 4.0; it was 10.3 for cancer of the larynx and 1.8 for cancer of the

esophagus.
