Total US cigar consumption was 9 billion in 1964. By 1994, it had dropped to 2.2

billion. However, the market for imported premium cigars costing $1.25 or more,

mostly from Jamaica, Honduras, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic, increased

from 88 million in 1989 to 122 million in 1994.

the 10 million cigar smokers, up from 0.1% a decade ago. 170 million premium

market's peak was in 1973, when Americans smoked more than 11.2 billion cigars.
