| | The 1998 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse was released by the U.S. |
| | Department of Health and Human Services. Based on interviews with 25,500 people, |
| | it is one of the most carefully conducted surveys in the nation. 60 million Americans, or |
| | 27.7% of the population age 12 and older, were current cigarette smokers in 1998, a |
| | decrease from 29.6% a year earlier. This included 29.7% of men and 25.7% of |
| | women. The highest rates were in young adults ages 18 to 25, 41.6%, a significant |
| | increase from 34.6% in this age group in 1994. 18.2% of youth ages 12 to 17 (18.7% |
| | of boys and 17.7% of girls) were current smokers, a total of 4.1 million and a rate |
| | similar to the 18.9% in 1994. Levels of education were correlated with smoking rates; |
| | 50% of adults ages 26 to 34 who had not completed high school smoked, while only |
| | 15% of college graduates in this group smoked. |
