| | Low tar and nicotine brands of cigarettes increased in sales from 2% to 55% of the |
| | market in the last twenty years. But smokers of these brands have a false sense of |
| | security. There is no decrease in heart disease risk, and only a small decrease in lung |
| | cancer risk with these brands. Smokers compensate for lower yields by smoking |
| | more cigarettes, puffing more frequently, and inhaling more deeply. In summary, the |
| | health problems caused by smoking are not reduced by switching to low tar and |
| | nicotine brands. |
