issues

Low tar and nicotine brands of cigarettes increased in sales from 2% to 55% of the

market in the last twenty years. But smokers of these brands have a false sense of

security. There is no decrease in heart disease risk, and only a small decrease in lung

cancer risk with these brands. Smokers compensate for lower yields by smoking

more cigarettes, puffing more frequently, and inhaling more deeply. In summary, the

health problems caused by smoking are not reduced by switching to low tar and

nicotine brands.

The average cigarette delivers about one milligram of nicotine to the smoker. When

the number of cigarettes available to heavy smokers was reduced from 38 to five per

day, the intake of nicotine inhaled from each cigarette tripled.

Switching from higher-yield to lower-yield cigarettes has been shown to result in

smoking more cigarettes or smoking more intensively, both of which are associated

with increased exposure to carbon monoxide and other toxins.

Switching to low yield brands may even increase the health risk for smokers who

compensate for reduced nicotine intake by increasing the number of cigarettes

smoked per day, the frequency of puffing, and the depth and duration of inhalation.
