| | The FDA in 1997 approved the antidepressant bupropion (marketed by Glaxo as |
| | Zyban) as the first nicotine-free antismoking drug. It appears to reduce the desire for |
| | tobacco. |

| | In a study from the Mayo Clinic on smoking cessation, the antidepressant bupropion |
| | at 150 milligrams twice a day for seven weeks, beginning one week before the quit |
| | date, was found to be similar in clinical efficacy to nicotine replacement therapy. At the |
| | above dose, the rate of smoking cessation was 44% at six weeks and 23% at one |
| | year on bupropion (Zyban), compared to 23% and 12.4%, respectively, in the placebo |
| | group. The drug was well tolerated, with the most common side effects being |
| | headache, dry mouth, and difficulty sleeping. The average weight gain was only 1.5 |
| | kilograms, compared with the typical weight gain associated with successful smoking |
| | cessation of 3 to 4 kg. |
