pharmacologic treatment

In a study from the Mayo Clinic, nicotine patch therapy plus minimal behavioral

intervention was ineffective for smoking cessation in adolescent smokers; the 6-month

successful abstinence rate was only 5%.

Nicotine replacement via patch, nasal spray, and inhaler are equally effective, but

compliance is much higher with the patch.

Combining nicotine patch therapy with nicotine gum or nasal spray or inhalers, or

combining patch with bupropion, may increase smoking cessation rates compared

with any single treatment.

In a study from Iceland, use of nicotine nasal spray combined with the nicotine patch

was a more effective method of stopping smoking than use of a patch only.

Over the counter nicotine patch therapy is effective for smoking cessation; active

patch users have double the cessation rates over placebo control subjects in most

clinical trials. In a study from the Mayo Clinic of nicotine patch therapy without behavior

modification treatment, smoking cessation rates were 18.4% and 11.0% at 12 weeks

(end of patch therapy) and 26 weeks, respectively. This compared to 7.0% and 4.2%

cessation rates at 12 and 26 weeks in the placebo groups.
