Women and smoking: General

globalink (artefact pour saut de ligne)

The executive director of a major women's organization commented: "Philip Morris is

probably (our) first corporate contributor... Politics is about taking care of the people

By interfering with the body's production of estrogen, smoking increases a woman's

risk for fractures and for osteoporosis by making her bones less dense. If a woman

smokes a pack a day, by the time she reaches menopause, her bones will be 5% to

10% less dense than they otherwise would have been.

American Medical News, March 7, 1994

Women who smoke a pack a day have a 5-10% deficit in bone mass by the time they

reach menopause. Teenage girls who smoke have a lower bone mineral density than

similar-aged girls who don't smoke.
