Women and smoking: General

"Something is out of whack when women who smoke are more terrified of breast

cancer, about which they can do very little, than of lung cancer, which they can

effectively prevent - and when one of the main reasons they continue to puff away is

that they fear modest weight gain often attendant on quitting."

Kathy Pollit from Dr. Nancy Snyderman's Guide to Good Health, William Morrow,

1996, p. 107

"For more than twenty years, advertisements for Virginia Slims in magazines such as

Cosmopolitan and Vogue included sepia-toned vignettes that contrasted subjugated,

male-dominated housewives of the 19th century with the liberated superwomen of

today - who smoke Virginia Slims. Recollection of the fact that black women were

enslaved in the 19th century doubtless led the cigarette advertiser to make a different

approach to their descendants; advertisements for Virginia Slims in Ebony and

Essence magazines stuck strictly to models holding cigarettes."

Tobacco now causes almost one third of all US female deaths in middle age. The US

has only 5% of the world's females, but it has 50% of the world's female deaths from

smoking.

"During the 1990's, smoking is going to kill about a quarter million women in the

United States each year. That's out of a worldwide total of half a million women a year

killed by tobacco. The United States may have only 4% of the female population of the

world, but it's going to have 50% of the deaths from tobacco in the world among

women. If the women smoke like men, then they're going to die like men."
