75% to 90% of African Americans prefer menthol cigarettes, compared to 23% to

25% of whites. Among African American teenagers, 70% choose Newport and 12%

choose Kool, both menthol brands. "Menthol cigarettes were introduced in the 1930's,

but did not exceed 3% of the total market until 1949. By 1963 the market share was

16%, and by 1976 it was 28%. Sales to African Americans accounted for the vast

majority of this increase."

Among smokers younger than age 18, blacks are much more likely than whites to

smoke menthol brand cigarettes - 70% of blacks compared to 9% of whites choose

Newport, and 12% of blacks and less than 1% of white adolescents prefer Kools.
