A 1993 winner of a $5000 "Kool Achiever" award was Ronald Johnson, a former

gang member now working in a gang prevention program. At an awards ceremony, he

declined the prize in front of a stunned audience, citing nicotine addiction as having

turned into "a war on black men." He called nicotine the "number one most addictive

drug on the planet," and the audience of 150 gave him a standing ovation.

go hire actor Danny Glover to appear in ads that say that the company really doesn't

think that 'kids' should smoke... Do we really think that the fox truly cares about the

safety of the chickens?"

cigarette that they smoke; this may explain why they have more difficulty stopping

smoking and have a higher rate of lung cancer.

alcohol, compared with 36% of billboards in the white community. In a poor black area

of Philadelphia, 66 out of 73 billboards in one 19-block area advertised alcohol or

tobacco.
