| | Senior medical students in northern Africa have 27% smoking rates and in southern |
| | Africa, 18%. This compares to 21% for the same group in Europe. In Senegal, West |
| | Africa, the amount of money that consumers spent on cigarettes doubled between |
| | 1985 and 1990. "On the streets of Senegal, billboards for L&M cigarettes show |
| | well-dressed, smiling white young people with the caption, 'Go For It!' An American |
| | flag and a red, white and blue color scheme support the ad's most explicit claim, 'real |
| | American taste'." |

| | In Senegal, a very poor country in West Africa, "most store counters sport the |
| | Marlboro man's image along with the phrase 'The cigarette sold most around the |
| | world!' Camel advertises itself on automobiles as 'the taste of action' and plays up the |
| | fact it is 'made in the U.S.A.!' ...At least 90% of all cigarette billboards in Senegal |
| | show Caucasians only, a striking phenomenon in a country whose only light-skinned |
| | people are essentially albino or tourists." When people were asked to estimate the |
| | percentage of smokers in the United States, the average estimate was 60%. |

| | In Nigeria, 24% of men and 7% of women are smokers (1990 survey). In South Africa |
| | in 1995, 52% of men and 17% of women smoke. In Zaire, smoking rates have |
| | increased from 20% of men and 10% of women in 1980 to 40% of men and 25% of |
| | women in 1992. 50% of physicians and nurses smoke in Zaire, as do 60% of |
