A tobacco counterad televised in France had a macho cowboy riding a horse on the

range with inspirational western music playing. He dismounted and, instead of

pushing Marlboros, advised listeners not to smoke. In a lawsuit against the ad, Philip

Morris asked $3 million in damages, but was awarded the sum of one French franc.

However, they were successful having the message taken off the air.

In France between 1953 and 1991, smoking prevalence in adult men decreased from

72% to 38%; in women during the same period, it increased from 17% to 26%. The

highest current smoking rates are for young adults age 20 to 34; 69% of men and

62% of women in this age group are current smokers.

The prevalence of smoking in women in France increased from 12% in 1965 to 35%

in 1991; more than 50% of women age 18 now smoke. Death rates in 1994 were

55,000 men and 5,000 women; in forty years tobacco-related deaths for men are

expected to double to 110,000 and women's death rates to increase more than

tenfold to 55,000.

In the Netherlands in 1995, 39% of men and 31% of women smoked. It is estimated

that in 1992 nearly 30,000 deaths, almost one in four, were caused by smoking.
