China manufactured 750 billion cigarettes in 1978, 960 billion in 1983, and (as the

world's largest producer and consumer) 1586 billion in 1989. China produces 50% of

the world's tobacco and 25% of the world's cigarettes.

Per capita cigarette consumption in developed countries decreased by 13 percent

between 1985 and 1992. In China, it increased by 20 percent, and estimates now are

that roughly 50 million of the young people alive today in China under age 20 years will

die prematurely from the consequences of smoking.

"Grim Forecast for World's Smokers", Reuters, May 31, 1994

Smoking prevalence in Chinese youth is increasing by 3% each year. There are

reports from China of "babies and toddlers being given puffs on lighted cigarettes to

stop them from crying. Kung Mingming, a four-year-old, became so rapidly addicted

that he constantly pestered his parents for cigarettes."

Tobacco Control 2:7, 1993
