Addressing the opening session of the 10th World Conference on Tobacco or Health

at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Chinese President Jiang Zemin called for

more health and environmental awareness, and lamented the 700,000 yearly deaths

from tobacco in China.

On October 7, 1997, Chinese President Jiang Zemin met with Philip Morris CEO

Geoffrey Bible, and praised the company's efforts to retain China's most favored

nation trade status. Bible pledged increased involvement in China and cooperation

with Chinese companies.

In China, 45-50% of all tobacco-related deaths are caused by chronic obstructive

pulmonary disease and emphysema, 13-15% from lung cancer, and the rest from

vascular and heart disease plus other cancers. The COPD death rate is much higher,

and heart disease death rate much lower, than for smokers in most other areas of the

world. In developed countries, 25% of deaths are from lung cancer, 15% from COPD,

35% from vascular and heart disease, and 25% from other cancers.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the main cause of tobacco-related death in

Chinese smokers, accounting for half of the total; 13% of the deaths are from lung

cancer, and liver, stomach, and esophageal cancer is also common.
