Only 2% of Chinese men had quit and were former smokers in 1993; in 1996 in

China, 61% of smokers questioned thought that tobacco did them "little or no harm."

60% of Chinese adults do not know that smoking causes lung cancer, and 96% do not

know that it causes heart disease. In 1987, about 13% of deaths in Chinese men

were from tobacco use, but this figure may eventually increase to 33%. Of the deaths,

only 15% were from lung cancer but 45% from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,

the reverse of the pattern in the west.
