From 1975 to 1995, total tobacco consumption dropped 5% in developed countries,

but more than doubled in developing countries.

Consumption in the third world is growing by more than 2% per year. With current

smoking rates, the number of smokers dying from their habit each year in poor

countries will increase from 1 million per year in 1992 to 7 million deaths a year thirty

years from now. In the rich countries, deaths will increase from the current 2 million to

3 million per year.

The World Health Organization has said, "Deaths caused by smoking in the

developing world will soon wipe out gains made in preventing deaths from malnutrition

and communicable diseases." This future epidemic "will result in the loss of more
