From 1955 to 1991 in Japan, rates of lung cancer increased tenfold from seventh to

second place among cancer deaths, just behind stomach cancer. 60% of Japanese

men and 44% of physicians are smokers; overall, 36% of adults smoke, compared to

25% in the US. Lung cancer deaths in Japan doubled between 1950 and 1991, and

by 1994, lung cancer overtook stomach cancer as the most common cancer killer for

men.
