Brazil's 100,000 tobacco farmers alone need annually the wood of about 60 million

trees, or the equivalent of 1.5 million acres of forest, to cure their tobacco, according

to one estimate. In 1991 alone, 20,000 new curing barns were built.

has announced a ban on cigarette advertising in sporting and cultural events and on

Cigarette consumption in Brazil dropped rapidly in the early 1990's, from 164 billion in

1990 to 103 billion in 1994, a per capita drop of 40 percent taking into account

population growth.

In 1993, Brazil overtook the US as the world's largest exporter of raw tobacco. In

1994, Brazil exported $1 billion worth of tobacco, double the level of five years earlier.
