| | A California biotechnology company has agreed to plead guilty to conspiring with a |
| | major cigarette producer (unofficially identified as Brown and Williamson) to increase |
| | the nicotine content of tobacco plants. The research project by DNA Plant Technology |
| | tried to produce high nicotine varieties of tobacco by using types of biotechnology |
| | such as gene splicing and advanced plant breeding. A tobacco plant was developed |
| | called "Y-1" whose leaves yielded 6% nicotine, twice the normal level. Because it is |
| | illegal to grow these high nicotine plants in the United States, company executives |
| | "were portrayed as having spent most of the past decade boarding airplanes carrying |
| | secret stashes of designer tobacco seeds" to places such as Brazil. |
