In 1990, Philip Morris controlled 11.6% of the global cigarette market and sold 640

billion cigarettes. It was second in size to the Chinese tobacco monopoly, which sold

1.5 trillion cigarettes to China's 300 million smokers.

The 1996 Marlboro US market share increased to 32.1%, the highest ever. Philip

Morris now has 46.1% of the domestic market, while RJR continues to decline, now

controlling 25.7%.
