Philip Morris spent $77 million on Formula One races in 1997; overall, tobacco

companies contribute over $200 million of the $790 million that Formula One receives

for sponsorships and prize money.

Philip Morris was the number one contributor to political parties and candidates in the

1995-96 election cycle, with $4.2 million for political action committees, individual gifts

to campaigns, and "soft money" to political parties. 79% was to Republicans, and

21% to Democrats. RJR Nabisco contributed $2.3 million (80% to Republicans), and

U.S. Tobacco $1.46 million (83% to Republicans).

increased its pressure on the international front to ensure expansion. International

sales for Philip Morris have quadrupled over the last 10 years. Philip Morris has over

60% of the cigarette market in Argentina; over 50% in Hong Kong and Italy; and over

40% in Singapore, Germany, and Switzerland. The tobacco giant is one of the top ten

advertisers in Hong Kong, Austria, Belgium, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland,
