RJR Nabisco in 1992 had a new chairman and CEO, Charles "Mike" Harper. A

former heavy smoker, he quit in 1985 following a heart attack. Before his RJR

appointment, Harper created and became the driving force behind ConAgra's Healthy

Choice line of frozen foods.

RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. is suing one of its former scientists, Anthony Colucci, and

is seeking a court order barring him from revealing confidential information he gained

during 15 years as a Reynolds scientist. Colucci, who has smoked himself for more

than 30 years, said on ABC's Primetime Live that Reynolds had shut down a

biological research program in 1970 because it was on the verge of proving a link

between smoking and lung cancer.

RJ Reynolds III, 60, grandson of the founder of the tobacco company that bears his

name, died in July 1994 of emphysema and congestive heart failure after a lifetime of

cigarette smoking. Attendees at his memorial service were asked to forego flowers in

a favor of donations to Citizens for Smokefree America, an antismoking group

founded by his brother Patrick Reynolds.
