| | About $1.6 billion for tobacco subsidies were spent by the European Commission in |
| | 1992, an amount 800 times more than the budget that was provided for smoking |

| | Pesticide poisonings in the tobacco field workers are not uncommon, particularly in |
| | developing countries where worker safety regulations and precautions are often lax or |
| | non-existent. Tobacco cultivation is very chemical intensive. During the early tobacco |
| | growing stages, up to 16 applications of pesticides in a three month period are |
| | recommended. Some of the pesticides used are parathion, methyl bromide, |
| | carbofuran, and aldicarb. |

| | 5. ôFarmers and workers are suffering hard times because tobacco companies are |
| | now importing more than one third of the tobacco used in US-made cigarettes, |
| | producing more cigarettes overseas and automating production to eliminate |
| | manufacturing jobs. While encouraging American farmers to fight tobacco taxes, |
| | major tobacco companies are teaching growers in other countries how to produce |
| | tobacco for the US market. These actions by tobacco manufacturers have caused |
| | more job losses among farmers and workers than a tobacco tax ever will.ö |
